Okay so, lemme tell you straight — if you’re even thinking about going to Sikkim, do it. Just go. Don’t overthink. It’s one of the best places I’ve been to in the hills. Like, it’s calm, clean (which is rare now), and just gives you that peaceful vibe everyone talks about.
But also yeah, planning it on your own can be kinda messy. That’s why I’d say go with a tour package unless you really like handling bookings, permits, drivers, hotel calls, all that stuff.
What’s So Special About Sikkim Anyway?
If you’ve never been to the North-East before, Sikkim is the perfect place to start. It’s small, not too crowded (depends on season tho), and people there are honestly so polite. You get the hills, cool weather, prayer flags everywhere, and little cafés that serve you momos and tea like it’s a warm hug.
And Gangtok? Super chill place. Has city stuff but still feels calm. The roads are actually clean, MG Road looks like it’s from another country sometimes. Not kidding.
What Comes in a Tour Package?
Alright, so here’s what most decent tour packages cover. Not saying all of them do — always ask before paying.
-
Travel pick-up & drop: They’ll usually pick you up from Bagdogra airport or NJP station and drop you back at the end.
-
Hotels: They book places for you to stay in Gangtok or wherever you’re going — could be basic or luxury, depending on how much you’re paying.
-
Sightseeing: The usual places like Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathula Pass, Rumtek Monastery etc.
-
Permits: Some places (like Nathula) need special permits. The package folks mostly handle this, but double check, okay?
-
Meals: Breakfast is mostly included. Some give dinner too, but rarely lunch.
-
Car/Driver: You get a driver for all the local stuff. Sometimes they talk, sometimes they just drive in silence (which is fine too).
How Many Days You Need?
5 to 6 days is solid. You won’t see everything but you’ll see enough to say “yeah, I went to Sikkim.” If you want a slow, relaxed trip then maybe go for 7-8 days. Totally depends on you.
Example Plan (Kinda What I Did Too)
Day 1 – Reach Bagdogra/NJP, drive to Gangtok (takes 4-5 hrs), check in, walk around MG Road.
Day 2 – Gangtok local sightseeing – Rumtek, Flower Exhibition, Institute of Tibetology (this place is cool, btw).
Day 3 – Day trip to Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir. If lucky, Nathula Pass (permit & weather dependent).
Day 4 – Leave for Pelling (another town, great views of Kanchenjunga). Takes around 4 hrs.
Day 5 – See stuff in Pelling – Skywalk, monasteries, and chill.
Day 6 – Come back to Bagdogra/NJP. Trip done.
Few Things Nobody Tells You
-
The roads are twisty AF. If you get car sick, please take a tablet. Or carry mints, helps a bit.
-
Nathula Pass is hit or miss. Weather can ruin plans. And you can’t blame anyone, not even the tour guy.
-
Don’t expect luxury unless you pay for it. Budget packages = budget hotels = basic rooms. It’s fine if you’re not picky.
-
Carry cash. Not all small towns or food stalls accept UPI. Like, don’t take a risk.
Is It Better Than DIY Planning?
Honestly, yeah. I’ve done both types of trips and for Sikkim, I’d say go with a package. There are permits, different towns, long drives — too much to coordinate on your own if you’re new to the area.
With a package, it’s like – land, sit in car, enjoy, sleep, repeat. Simple.
Just make sure the agency isn’t shady. Google them, check reviews. And if a deal sounds too cheap… there’s a reason.
How Much It Costs Tho?
Okay, so rough idea:
-
Budget (basic hotels, shared vehicle): ₹9k–₹12k per person
-
Mid-range (decent stay, private car): ₹15k–₹20k
-
Fancy/luxury (3-4 star stay, guided tours): ₹25k+
This is usually for 5-6 days. Prices go up in peak season (April–June), so book early if you’re going then.
What to Carry (Don’t Forget!)
-
Warm clothes (even in summer, evenings are cold sometimes)
-
Medicines (for headache, cold, motion sickness)
-
Raincoat/umbrella (especially if going Jun-Sept)
-
Power bank (not all places have 24×7 electricity lol)
-
Sunglasses + sunscreen (mountain sun hits diff)
Final Thoughts (No Fancy Ending)
Look, Sikkim isn’t just another place to check off your list. It feels different. The air, the vibe, even the silence there is peaceful. And when you get away from your phone and just look around — wow.
If you don’t want the stress of bookings and permits and local travel confusion, just book a tour package. Saves time, and you can actually enjoy your vacation.
Just go. Don’t overthink. You’ll come back with a calmer mind, and maybe a hundred pics of mountains you’ll never delete.
