Kitchen Interior Design – Some Thoughts, Ideas & Mistakes We All Make

Date:

Okay so like, let’s talk kitchen stuff. Interior design in the kitchen is not just about making it look pretty for the ‘gram (though that’s fun too lol). It’s actually about functioning well too. Bc if your kitchen looks amazing but you can’t find a spoon when you need one… what’s the point right??

So this is like a mix of tips, mistakes ppl make (yes I’ve made some too), and ideas for kitchen interiors. Not professional designer talk. Just regular-person thoughts.

First things first – what even is kitchen interior design?

It’s just how your kitchen is setup. Like how the counters are, where you put the stove, what kind of cabinets you use, what colors, what materials (wood? granite? plastic??), and how everything works together. You want it to be nice to look at but also practical af.

You gotta cook in there. Wash. Store stuff. Sometimes even chill. So design gotta work with all that.

1. Layout matters more than anything.

This is honestly the most important part and also the one ppl get wrong a lot. Your layout is how stuff is placed:

  • Stove here

  • Sink there

  • Fridge here

There’s something called the kitchen work triangle (I only heard of this recently tbh) – it’s the triangle between the stove, sink, and fridge. If they’re too far apart, or too close, your kitchen becomes annoying fast.

Like I once lived in a flat where the fridge was literally across the room from the stove. Nightmare

So even before thinking about color or tiles, think about where things are gonna go.

2. Storage is never enough. Ever.

You always think “oh this is plenty” when you’re designing… but fast forward 6 months and suddenly you have 6 saucepans, 3 pressure cookers and 28 plastic containers with no lids.

Go for more cabinets than you think you need.

Some cool storage ideas:

  • pull-out drawers instead of doors

  • vertical spice racks

  • hanging rails for mugs or pans

  • under-sink organizers

  • big deep drawers for pots

Also: open shelves look cute but dust is real, so maybe not everywhere.

3. Lighting – don’t sleep on this

Nobody thinks about lighting until it’s too late. Like, you’ll have this gorgeous countertop and you can’t even see what you’re chopping cuz the light’s behind you.

Try to have:

  • ceiling lights (general)

  • under cabinet lighting (for chopping areas)

  • maybe pendant lights if you got an island or bar counter

Warm lighting makes the kitchen feel cozy but too warm can feel yellowy. Balance is key.

4. Color themes – not just black & white pls

Yes, white kitchens are trendy. Yes, they look clean. But also, white shows everything. Every oil splash. Every fingerprint.

Dark colors are sleek but can make a small kitchen feel tinier.

Right now, earthy tones are in. Like muted greens, dusty blues, warm browns. Not too loud, but not boring either.

Mixing textures helps too – like matte cabinets with glossy backsplash? Or wood shelves with marble counter?

Don’t forget the small details like cabinet handles – they lowkey make a big diff.

5. Countertops – not just about looking good

Marble is pretty but stains easily. Granite is tough. Quartz is somewhere in-between. Wood looks nice but high maintenance. So yeah, not all pretty things are practical.

Also – if you don’t have enough countertop space, cooking becomes a fight. You need:

  • space to chop

  • space to place cooked stuff

  • space near stove for utensils or masalas

If your kitchen’s small, try foldable counters or extra shelves that slide out.

6. Backsplash – style + function

Backsplash is the wall part behind your stove/sink. It protects the wall from water/oil etc. But also can be a style moment.

Tiles are classic. But there’s also glass panels, stainless steel (looks v modern), or even stone.

Patterned tiles can add life to a plain kitchen. But go too wild and it might feel messy. So keep balance.

Make sure whatever material you pick is easy to clean bc that thing WILL get dirty.

7. Don’t forget ventilation ‍

Nobody wants a fancy kitchen that smells like fried onions 24/7. So yeah, chimney or exhaust fan is not optional.

Also, if you’re redoing the kitchen, make sure there’s enough air flow. Windows matter.

I once had a kitchen with no chimney and no window. Regret. Deep regret.

8. Flooring – not slippery pls

Tiles, vinyl, wooden flooring… lots of options. Just make sure:

  • it’s easy to clean

  • doesn’t get slippery when wet

  • doesn’t stain easily

I like matte finish tiles bc they hide dirt better lol. Avoid too many grooves or textures — those trap dirt.

9. Seating area (if you got space)

If your kitchen is big enough to have an island or even just a bar counter… that’s awesome. Great for quick breakfasts or gossip while cooking

Add a couple of stools or chairs. Even small kitchens can sometimes squeeze in a bench against the wall.

Some ppl even put a small dining table in the kitchen — that’s kind of old-school but cute.

10. Make it you

At the end of the day, your kitchen should feel like your space. Don’t follow trends just for Instagram.

Add stuff that makes it yours:

  • fridge magnets

  • a chalkboard wall for groceries or random quotes

  • plants (yes even in kitchens!)

  • colorful utensils

  • vintage containers

  • fairy lights? why not lol

Designing a kitchen is kinda stressful but also super fun. Just don’t forget the practical stuff while making it look nice.

Mistakes I’ve made (so you don’t)

  • Put white marble counter = oil stains forever

  • Didn’t leave enough space between stove and sink = chaos when cooking

  • Got black shiny tiles = shows every speck of dust

  • No drawers near stove = kept running around for spoons

  • No lights under cabinets = cut veggies in semi-darkness

Learn from me lol.

Final words (if you read this far, hi )

Kitchen interior design is not just about money or making it fancy. It’s about comfort. It’s about creating a space where you can cook, eat, chill, and not feel like screaming when you can’t find a lid

So yeah, plan your layout, think about storage, lighting, and don’t forget the small stuff.

Doesn’t matter if your kitchen is big or small — with a bit of thought, any space can look and feel amazing.

And hey, it’s your kitchen. Make it how you like it
